Drama and performing arts develop our young people in a variety of different ways whilst having fun and improving skills for life.
At Ynys Hywel, we use drama in real life contexts to:
At Key Stage 3, learners will study themes. Included in each theme are opportunities to develop their skills:
- Understanding addiction.
- Anger management.
At Key Stage 4, our young people will study all aspects of the outside world:
- Preparing for the world of work.
- Managing conflict.
Our themes will help them to:
- Improve confidence.
- Develop communication skills and clarity.
- Help understand the importance of body language, tone and facial expression.
- Develop leadership and organisation skills.
- Encourage collaboration.
- To develop reasoning and empathy skills.
- To develop literacy skills through script writing.
- Encourage creativity and innovation not just through performance but in costume design, scene setting etc.
Art & Design

At Ynys Hywel, we use art & design as a form of therapy. Art encompasses a range of techniques and materials including drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, graphics and photography.
We want our young people to experience these techniques and allow them to:

- Express their individuality and creativity recording their personal ideas through Art & Design.
- Develop their observation and analysis skills by studying local artists and understanding artistic passion.
- Learn about famous artists and their practices.
- Be innovative and present their ideas in a variety of different forms.
- Experiment using a range of artistic equipment.
- Evidence their ability to think critically, plan their work, solve problems and evaluate work for improvement.
- Consider what careers can be linked to Art & Design.
- Give our young people the opportunity to collaborate with external artists and develop their skills through specialised projects.
- Use their artistic creations to develop links with the local community.
Music
Ynys Hywel Learning Community
Music is a fascinating and multifaceted art form that involves arranging sounds to create harmony, melody, rhythm, and expressive content. It can be produced using various instruments, including the human voice, and is often used to evoke emotions, tell stories, and connect people across cultures and time.
Music is ever present in our young people’s lives and in all human societies playing a significant role in social events, religious ceremonies, and entertainment.
At Ynys Hywel, we want our young people to be able to:

- Consider how music brings people together and develops communities.
