Geography
Ynys Hywel Learning Community
The study of Geography develops our young people’s understanding of the world around them on a local, national and international level.
Included in the Geography Curriculum are ‘drop down’ days, where our young people will carry out research projects on specific countries with a view to presenting their findings orally supported by a digital presentation.
At Key Stage 3, learners will study themes. Included in each theme are opportunities to develop their skills.
- Speaking and listening skills.
- Interpretation of data.
- Critical thinking.
- Written and numerical skills.
- A wider understanding of our place in the world.
At Key Stage 4, our young people will study qualifications that intertwine with a range of geographical areas.
- Globalisation.
- The causes of inequality around the globe.
History
Ynys Hywel Learning Community
At Key stage 3, our young people will study History through our thematic approach. They will understand how historical experiences have created change, the nature of human relationships and how this contributed to key events in our past. They will continue to develop knowledge and skills.
At Key Stage 4, our young people will develop their understanding further by focussing on key historical events and planning, researching and disseminating their key findings.
Our themes will help them to:
- Reading, understanding and responding to key sources of information.
- Describing and analysing the key features of the period/historical event studied.
- Thinking critically and solving problems.
- Discussing whether events in History were socially, morally and ethically acceptable.
Religion, Values & Ethical Studies
Ynys Hywel Learning Community
At Key Stage 3, Religion, Values and Ethical studies helps our young people understand that they live in a diverse world. It teaches them to understand we are all different and that by self-reflection, cultural understanding and developing our empathy skills, we can live fulfilling lives as part of a global community.
Studying Religion, Values & Ethics can offer a skillset to prospective employers as they will see you as someone who understands how to form positive relationships, understand that our communities are diverse and have empathy when working with others.
At Key Stage 3, included in each theme are opportunities to develop their knowledge & skills e.g.
- Listening, reading, oracy and writing.
- Critical thinking.
- Evaluation of real- life events.
- Reflection as to whether events were socially, morally and ethically acceptable .
- Using new knowledge and understanding to change the way they think, speak and act.
At Key Stage 4, our young people will study qualifications where RVE is intertwined e.g.
- Community.
- Beliefs and Values.
- Rights and Responsibilities.
