Languages & Literacy
Developing our young people’s communication skills across English Language, Welsh Language (Cymraeg), and Modern Foreign Languages—equipping every learner with the confidence and voice to overcome real-world challenges.
Equipping our young people to cope with the demands of formal examinations, achieve nationally-recognised qualifications, and prepare as confident citizens ready for the world of work.
01 • POSITIF EDUCATION
English Language
We make it a priority to develop our young people’s language skills and equip them with a bank of skills that will enable them to overcome any challenge they may face outside in the real world.
The delivery of English through a thematic framework supports our young people to develop their language skills in two main areas: Oracy and Literacy. These skills will be developed through integrating our work with a range of texts via four core strands:
- Oracy
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
At Key Stage 3, our young people study themes relevant to them:
- Health & Wellbeing
- Positive Relationships
- Digital Competence
- Caring for Others
- The Sporting World
- Substance Misuse
- Smoking & Vaping
- Body Image
In addition, learners develop their language skills through Independent Projects:
- Food's Impact on the Body
- The Aberfan Tragedy
- The Power of Sport
- A Day Abroad
Whilst improving their language skills, we also aim to encourage:
- Analytical thought
- A passion for reading a variety of different media types
- A desire to explore other disciplines (e.g. Theatre, Music, Media)
- Their ability to spell and punctuate their writing accurately
- To hold social, moral and ethical values
02 • POSITIF EDUCATION
Welsh Language
Understanding our heritage, culture, traditions and values helps us to develop a sense of pride as Welsh citizens. Our journey begins with Cynefin and developing our young peoples’ knowledge of where they come from. Using the Welsh language skills in Oracy, Reading, Listening and Writing will support their identity as Welsh citizens and help them understand how we form part of a global community.
Our Welsh curriculum will be delivered across Key Stage 3 by non-Welsh speakers and will focus heavily on the development of their Welsh Language criteria alongside the history, culture and traditions of Wales.
At Key Stage 3, learners will study the following themes (with embedded opportunities to develop their Welsh language skills):
- The Community Where I Live
- The Tragedy at Aberfan
- Celebrities
- Our Place in the World
- Customs & Traditions
- Sports
03 • POSITIF EDUCATION
Foreign Languages
Our Modern Languages curriculum will be delivered thematically and will focus on acquisition of vocabulary. Not only will it prepare our young people should they travel abroad on holiday, for work or for more specific purposes, it will help develop how they see themselves in the wider world and will be based on real life scenarios.
Whilst developing their Modern Foreign Language skills we aim to raise the importance of foreign languages and help learners understand the opportunities available to them in the wider world if they possess those additional language skills.
Our practical, real-life themes will help learners to:
- Meet and greet
- Ask for directions
- Buy food at a supermarket
- Order food & drink in a restaurant
- Buy a ticket
- Book a hotel room
